Mesothelioma Surgery

Surgery
Depends on the stage of mesothelioma, an operation to remove the cancer and some surrounding tissue can be done. In general, surgery is not appropriate and the patient may have only minimally invasive procedure to relieve symptoms. Thoracentesis is a condition where the fluid in the chest is removed by placing a needle into the chest cavity can be done to a patient to ease. Talc or an antibiotic may be injected into the chest cavity to try to prevent fluid return. For peritoneal mesothelioma, a needle can be inserted into the body to drain fluid.

Surgery for mesothelioma can be done for two reasons which is to relieve or cure. Palliative surgery done in cases where the tumor has already spread through the mesothelium and is difficult to eliminate completely, or in cases where the patient is too ill to a larger operation performed. Curative surgery is performed if the patient is healthy and the tumor is localized and can be completely eliminated. However, the spread of microscopic cancer cells in the wall of the diaphragm and chest are common and hardly to get detected.

Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a much more extensive surgery and most often used in cases of localized mesothelioma. The surgery is technically difficult and done by surgeons in major medical centers. It is the removal of the pleura, diaphragm, pericardium and lungs in the tumor. The patient must accept the general state of health, without other serious diseases before the major operation started. This process involves removing all or most cancers and some surrounding tissue.

Surgical treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma usually relieve symptoms or try to remove the tumor from the lining of the stomach and other digestive organs performed. Pleural mesothelioma, these tumors are often too large to be eliminated. In some operations, mesothelioma from the pericardium are removed.

Can you explain the distinction between palliative surgery and curative surgery in the context of mesothelioma treatment? What factors influence the choice between these two types of surgeries?
